The bat parrots ( Loriculus ) are a genus of small, graceful parrots that live from southern India and Sri Lanka to New Guinea . The birds reach a total length of 12 to 13 centimeters. Their plumage is mainly bright green. With the exception of the woodpecker parrots ( Micropsitta ), they are the smallest parrots. Different head colors differentiate the species.
They get their German name from their habit of hanging upside down asleep, a position of rest that is hardly known from any other bird species. Like the agapornids , they carry their nest-building material between the rump plumage to the nest. Bat parrots feed primarily on flowers, nectar, and pollen .
