Massimo Vignelli
Massimo Vignelli (born January 10, 1931 in Milan , † May 27, 2014 in New York City ) was an Italian graphic and industrial designer and architect .
Life
Massimo Vignelli studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and the Università IUAV di Venezia . In 1960 he opened the Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture in Milan with his wife Lella Vignelli . In 1965 he was co-founder and design director of Unimark International . He had lived in Manhattan since the mid-1960s . In 1971 he renamed his office to Vignelli Associates and was its president. In 1978 he founded Vignelli Designs in New York and was its Chief Executive Officer.
He taught for a long time at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He was President of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and Vice President of the Architectural League .
His main focus and work were graphic design and corporate identity programs as well as architectural graphics. He dealt with exhibition design and interior design as well as furniture as well as with industrial design for consumer products. His work has been exhibited in many renowned museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York, Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Montreal, and New Collection in Munich. Between 1989 and 1993, an exhibition showed his work in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Helsinki, London, Budapest, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Munich, Prague and Paris. He is the namesake of The Vignelli Center For Design Studies , which he and his wife designed in 2010 at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester , New York State.
Vignelli died in May 2014 after a long illness at his home in Manhattan, New York.
