The individual contributions to the program, which was set up as a monthly magazine and which were characterized above all by their current relevance, were - whether musical or word-oriented - could best be compared with classic numbered cabaret .

The editor and director of the radio and television programs was always the quiz master Hans Rosenthal ; he always referred to himself as the "editor" of the flashback.

Curth Flatow was the author of the first twelve episodes, and later Horst Pillau , Volker Ludwig and Michael Alex wrote the text . Even Günter Neumann , Eckart Hachfeld , Jo Herbst , Dieter Hildebrandt , Klaus Peter Schreiner and Rolf Ulrich worked with individual contributions. Speakers and interpreters included Hans Söhnker , Günter Pfitzmann , Jo Herbst, Günther Lüders , Hans Wiegner , Erich Fiedler and Sigrid Lagemann .

A quote that is known and still used today is the theme song Die Rückblende by Olaf Bienert and the song That are people like you and me . Most of the music for the literary chansons was written by Heinrich Riethmüller .

The initially monthly issues of the flashback were studio productions. Later, the monthly rhythm was no longer adhered to, but from episode 172 (May 15, 1969) the cabaret broadcasts were carried out as public events, initially from the Theater of the Porcupines in the Europa Center in Berlin and then from the Humboldt Hall of Urania and the Ernst Reuter Hall in Berlin-Reinickendorf.

The "best of the flashback" was also released on record in the 1960s .
