The Trappist Mokoto (lat. Monasterium Beatae Mariae de Mokoto ; double. Monastère Cistercien Notre-Dame des Mokoto ) is since 1954 a monastery of Trappist monks in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa , Diocese of Goma .

history

Monks of the Belgian Trappist Abbey of Scourmont founded a monastery in 1954 in the area of the Mokotoseen in what was then the Belgian Congo , which was elevated to a priory in 1988 . In 1996 the convent had to flee because of ongoing unrest. The monastery called Notre-Dame des Mokoto (Our Lady of the Mokotoseen) was destroyed. After the monks had gathered again in Keshero near Goma in 1999 and were already thinking of staying there permanently, this plan was thwarted in 2002 by the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano . Therefore, in 2011 they returned to the original place and rebuilt the monastery. It is located 7 km from Lake Ndalaga at an altitude of 1800 m.
