André Louf

André Louf

André Louf (born December 28, 1929 in Leuven ; † July 12, 2010 in Godewaersvelde ) was a Belgian Roman Catholic priest, author, theologian, Trappist , abbot , scholar and translator who worked in France.

life and work

Jacques Louf attended the Saint-Louis high school in Bruges and was involved in Catholic Action . In 1947 he entered the Trappist monastery of Mont des Cats in French Flanders and took the religious name André . In 1954 he made his solemn profession and in 1955 he was ordained a priest. After further studies in Rome (at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute ), he took over the editing of the magazine Collectanea Cisterciensia in 1959 . From 1963 to 1997 he was abbot of his monastery (also long-time moderator of the general chapter of his order). Then he lived as a hermit near the Benedictine priory of St. Lioba von Tauberbischofsheim in Simiane-Collongue until shortly before his death , where he translated Jan van Ruusbroec and Isaac of Nineveh . In 2004 Pope John Paul II entrusted him with the drafting of the meditation text on his traditional Way of the Cross. He was an honorary doctor of the Catholic University of Leuven (1994).

As a theologian, André Louf never tired of emphasizing the chance that human weakness and sinfulness lie in so far as it (and not strength) gives occasion to divine mercy (as God's essential quality) to unfold gracefully.
