location

The place Le Poët-Sigillat is located on a 760 m high hilltop in the southwest of the Drôme department, near the border with the Vaucluse department . The next larger city, Nyons , is about 25 km (driving distance) to the west; the lovely town of Sainte-Jalle is only 6 km away.

The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the remote location of the place and the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture . At the end of the 1960s to the 1980s, the population even fell below 50.

economy

The inhabitants of the place lived for centuries as a self-sufficiency from agriculture (agriculture and cattle breeding). Wine was also grown; the place still has the right to market its grapes through the Appellations Comtés Rhodaniens , Coteaux des Baronnies , Mediterranée and Drôme ; There are still several vineyards in the vicinity of the village, but there are no longer any vintners in the village. The cultivation of olives, apricots, cherries and apples is also important; there are also numerous lavender fields . Since the last decades of the 20th century, tourism has played an important role in the economic life of the place in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

history

The part of the place name Poët is derived from the Latin word podium or from the Occitan words Puy or Pic , which all mean summit or mountain peak . The place belonging to the baronnies had a medieval fortress ( castrum ). In the 14th century, the region fell to the French Dauphin .

Attractions

Nave of Saint Martin
  • Most of the older buildings in the village are made of more or less unprocessed rubble stone ; newer houses are sometimes clad with rubble stones.
  • The rustic -looking Saint-Martin village church has a simple bell gable above the portal-free facade; the entrance is - unusual for the region - on the south side. The nave was restored at the beginning of the 21st century and impresses with its simplicity.
  • The Saint-Bernard chapel has a small bell tower above the entrance portal.
  • The Notre-Dame de Beaulieu chapel with its unadorned portal and a simple bell gable is located about a kilometer south of the village on the edge of a lavender field.
