Jeffrey F. Hamburger

Jeffrey F. Hamburger (born February 9, 1957 in London ) is an American art historian .

Life

Hamburg's grandparents had to emigrate from Leipzig and Cologne during the National Socialist era . He studied at Yale University , where he received his doctorate in 1987 . He taught at Oberlin College and the University of Toronto and became a professor at Harvard University in 2000 , where he has held the Kuno Francke Professorship for German Art and Culture since 2008. From 1996–1997 he was a Humboldt fellow at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich.

His main research interests are the sacred art of the Middle Ages and medieval illuminated manuscripts .

In 2012, Hamburger sent a petition to the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation against the demolition of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie , which is one of the most important collections of old masters in Europe, and launched a corresponding collection of signatures.

  • 1991 Gustave O. Arlt Award in Humanities from the American Council of Graduate Schools

In 2009 Hamburger was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2010 to the American Philosophical Society .

His research was supported by the Guggenheim Foundation , the American Philosophical Society, the Institute for Advanced Study , the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation .
