Staufen ( Swiss German : ˈʃtɑufːə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Lenzburg district and is located immediately west of the district capital in the Seetal .

geography

The area between the Seetal and the Aare is shaped by the Staufberg . This 517 meter high molasse hill is only 550 meters long and 450 meters wide, but towers above the otherwise completely flat gravel plain by around a hundred meters. The development of the village of Staufen surrounds the largely wooded hill on three sides. The eastern boundary of the municipality extends up to a few meters from the Aabach . In the northwest the community has a narrow strip of land in the Länzertwald, in the south lies the Buchwald. The municipalities of Staufen, Niederlenz and Lenzburg have grown together to form a coherent agglomeration with almost 20,000 inhabitants, the boundaries between the three places are barely recognizable.

The area of the municipality is 358 hectares , of which 119 hectares are forested and 102 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 517 meters on the summit of the Staufberg, the lowest at 393 meters in the Länzertwald. Neighboring communities are Lenzburg in the north and east, Seon in the south, Schafisheim in the west and Rupperswil in the north-west.

history

Traces of settlement in the municipality go back to the Neolithic Age . Stouffen was first mentioned in a document in 1036 in the necrology of Beromünster Abbey . The place name is derived from the Old High German word stouf and denotes a conical elevation. In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . From 1244 to at least 1278 the Lords of Staufen were mentioned as the owners of the lower jurisdiction , but at the beginning of the 14th century these disappeared without a trace. In 1362 the Beromünster Abbey sold all rights to the Königsfelden monastery , which was now the sole owner of the village.

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Staufen now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Bernese Aargau . In the course of the Reformation in 1528, Bern abolished the Königsfelden monastery, brought all rights into its possession and assigned the village to the judicial district of Rupperswil in the Lenzburg district . The Staufberg served as a high watch until 1880 . From 1659 a schoolmaster gave the children lessons. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Staufen has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, Staufen was dominated by agriculture, with agriculture and cattle breeding dominating. The viticulture at Staufberg, who was still the main source of income in 1700, came in 1900 because of the phylloxera epidemic complete standstill. However, with the rise of industry in neighboring Lenzburg, new income opportunities arose for the villagers. Vines have been planted again on the Staufberg since 1990.

Attractions

The landmark of the village is the Staufberg Church on the highest point of the Staufberg . A place of worship is said to have been here as early as pre-Christian times. The origins of the church go back at least to the 10th century. A lightning strike caused a fire in 1419 that cremated the tower and most of the choir . In 1420 the church was rebuilt in a Romanesque - Gothic transition style. The listed church district with church, parsonage, sod well, Sigristenhaus and cemetery has an almost castle-like shape due to its exposed location ; only a curtain wall is missing. In fact, a castle stables are believed to be on the highest point of the hill .

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red three yellow cups (baptism)." The cups refer to the Staufberg, which resembles an upside-down goblet. The chalices also indicate viticulture . The Old High German word Stouf also means chalice. For a long time the goblets were depicted on a blue background, which made the coat of arms similar to that of Staufen im Breisgau .

regional customs

The best known custom is the New Year's Eve fire, which is one of the Seetal winter customs . On the Staufberg, the youngsters who attend the last grade of the elementary school erect a high wooden frame in the old week of the year. On the morning of December 31, the school children in the village collect the dry Christmas trees, waves of rice and bales of straw. The material is carried up the mountain and piled on the scaffolding. At midnight, when the bells of the Staufberg Church strike, the fire is lit in front of many onlookers.
