Schafisheim ( Swiss German : Schòòfisse, ˈʃɔːfisːə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Lenzburg district and is located between Lenzburg and the canton capital Aarau .

geography

The village on the edge of the Aabach plain spreads out at the eastern foot of the 545 meter high Lotten. This molasse hill forms the northern end of a chain of hills around 30 kilometers long that separates the Seetal from the Wynental . To the south of the Lotten there are further wooded hills, the Binzen ( 563  m above sea level ) and the Mertlenberg ( 581  m above sea level ); a western branch of the Mertlenberg is the Salberg ( 556  m above sea level ).

A former gravel pit on the edge of the village was filled with water and converted into a nature reserve with numerous endangered animal and plant species. Somewhat offset to the north is the district of Talhard and adjoining it an extensive industrial and commercial zone. This area has completely merged with the development of Hunzenschwil . In the far south-east, at the foot of the Mertlenberg, is the agricultural hamlet of Bettental ( 441  m above sea level ). In a narrow side valley west of the three hills lies the small hamlet of Heuelmühle ( 416  m above sea level ).

The area of the municipality is 633 hectares , of which 261 hectares are forested and 144 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 581 meters on the summit of the Mertlenberg, the lowest at 388 meters in the Länzertwald on the northern municipal border. Neighboring communities are Rupperswil in the north, Staufen in the east, Seon in the southeast, Gränichen in the southwest and Hunzenschwil in the west.

history

Finds of urns from the Hallstatt period bear witness to an early settlement in the area. During the Roman era there was a manor here . Excavations in 1944 revealed four utility buildings, the main building has not yet been discovered. Graves indicate the later settlement by the Alemanni .

Scafusa was first mentioned in a document at Easter 1261. The place name comes from the Old High German (ze) scafhusun , which means "at the sheepfold". In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg and later the Counts of Kyburg . After the latter had died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . The lower jurisdiction was initially owned by the Alsatian monastery Murbach and passed to the Lords of Baldegg at the end of the 13th century. After the Baldegger castle was destroyed in the Sempach War of 1386, they had Schafisheim Castle built a few years later .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Schafisheim now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Bernese Aargau . In 1482 the Baldegger sold the castle and judiciary to the Hallwyler . By exchanging rights in Rupperswil , they were able to expand their influence in 1521. In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . After the Hallwylers' Schafisheim line died out, the Schafisheim estate came into the possession of Samuel and Etienne Brutel, descendants of French Huguenots who had fled Montpellier in 1736. The hamlet of Bettental was an autonomous Steckhof for centuries and was added to Schafisheim in 1751.

In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Schafisheim has belonged to the canton of Aargau. Until the 20th century the village was dominated by agriculture, with home work for the regional textile industry being added in the 19th century . The Brutel brothers' India printing company closed shortly before 1800, and later many residents worked in factories outside of Germany. After the opening of the motorway in 1967, the community experienced rapid development into an industrial and service location. The population has more than doubled since 1950.

Attractions

Schafisheim Castle is in the center of the village . The massive four-storey building was built a few years after the Sempach War of 1386 and formed the center of the Schafisheim jurisdiction. The oldest parts of the building come from the early 15th century, the striking stair tower was added at the beginning of the 17th century. It is the oldest castle building in Aargau, and from the beginning it was not designed as a fortification, but as a residential building.

Next to the castle is the Schafisheim church , which was mentioned in 1360 as a branch of the Staufberg parish (on the hill of the same name ) and was completely rebuilt in 1498. After the last private castle owner had used the church as a stable, the community bought the building in 1850 and restored it. The Urech house on Seetalstrasse is a late baroque country house with a mansard roof. It was built in 1783 and, like the castle, is a cultural asset of national importance .

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "White sheep walking in red." The origin of this talking coat of arms is obvious: The Old High German place name scafhusun ("at the sheep stables"). The coat of arms first appeared in a Bernese coat of arms book in 1621, but at that time it was still blue. The municipal seals of the 19th century show a ram, but since 1915 the sheep has been used as a heraldic animal again.
