Retterswil is a hamlet that belongs to the municipality of Seon in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland . It is located in the Seetal at an altitude of 510 meters on the eastern slope of the Bampf hill, around one kilometer south of the village center of Seon.
The place was first mentioned in 1045 as Ruothereswilare . The property was divided into two parts: the smaller part initially belonged to the Lords of Reinach and later to the Hallwylers . The greater part was first owned by the Lords of Heidegg, then by the Königsfelden monastery .
In the 15th century, Retterswil was judicially part of the Trostburg rule of the Lords of Hallwyl, but then received the status of an autonomous Steckhof . When the city of Bern dissolved almost all the Steckhöfe in its subject areas in 1751, Retterswil was assigned to the Seon community.
1805, two years after the founding of the canton of Aargau, Retterswil separated from Seon and was an independent municipality. The political independence did not even last a hundred years, because in 1899 Retterswil was again merged with Seon by order of the cantonal parliament. The village was viewed as too small to be able to finance the legally prescribed tasks on its own. Retterswil has remained agricultural to this day.
