Seon (in the local Swiss German dialect: Seen [ seːn ]) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Lenzburg district and is four kilometers south of the district capital in the Seetal . The hamlet of Retterswil was incorporated into the municipality in 1899.

geography

The area around the largest village in the Seetal is characterized by a terminal moraine that was created during the Würme Ice Age when the Reuss Glacier retreated . The moraine describes a quarter circle across the entire valley and flanks the buildings on the western and northern sides. The Aabach flows from the middle of the valley on its western side and after leaving the village on the eastern side of the valley; there it squeezes through a narrow passage between the moraine and the foothills of the Rietenberg. A forested range of hills rises to the west of the village. This forms the border to the Wynental and is strongly structured by several short side valleys. The most northerly is the Schürberg ( 549  m above sea level ), followed by the Breitenberg ( 551  m above sea level ), the Seenerberg ( 581  m above sea level ), the Surberg ( 600  m above sea level ) and the whole in the south the Bampf ( 607  m above sea level ). The hamlet of Retterswil is located about one and a half kilometers south of the village center .

The area of the municipality is 962 hectares , of which 285 hectares are forested and 210 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 607 meters on the summit of the Bampf, the lowest at 415 meters on the Aabach. The southwestern border point is the Siebenzwingstein . Neighboring communities are Schafisheim in the northwest, Staufen in the north, Lenzburg in the northeast, Egliswil in the east, Seengen in the southeast, Hallwil and Dürrenäsch in the south, Teufenthal in the southeast and Gränichen in the west.

history

Finds from the Neolithic Age and a burial mound from the Hallstatt period discovered in 1931 indicate early settlement. In 1945, during excavations near the border with Schafisheim, a small Roman farm came to light. The ceramic finds indicate that it was inhabited from the beginning of the 2nd to the middle of the 3rd century. On the Weinhalde was a burial ground of the Alemanni .

Sewa was first mentioned in a document in 893 in a toboggan run by the Fraumünster in Zurich . The place name comes from the Old High German ze sēwun, which means "at the lakeside spots, at the shore, landing spots" ( sēwun is the dative plural of ahd. Sēo "lake"). This could be an indication that the Hallwilersee, four kilometers away, once reached here, but it can also refer to an earlier wetland area stretching between the lake and the village. In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . The lower courts was two-thirds owned by the respective rulers, one-third owned by the free of Gösgen .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Seon now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . The village formed its own judicial district in the Lenzburg district . An opening has been recorded since 1479 . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . In addition to agriculture and livestock farming, some viticulture was added from the 17th century . In the 18th century, working from home was widespread for textile installers. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Seon has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

In the 15th century, the hamlet of Retterswil was still part of the Trostburg rule of the Lords of Hallwyl and then received the status of an autonomous Steckhof . Bern abolished almost all Steckhöfe in 1751 and so Retterswil came to Seon. After 1805 the hamlet was an independent municipality, but was then reunited with Seon in 1899.

Until well into the 19th century, Seon remained an agricultural village. Then numerous smaller industrial companies settled there, which used the hydropower of the Aabach . A small cotton weaving mill developed into a factory with at times hundreds of workers. In 1875 Seon bought a large piece of forest in the neighboring Wynental from the owners of Liebegg Castle . On October 15, 1883, the community was connected to the railway network when the Lenzburg– Beinwil am See section of the Seetalbahn was opened. A canning factory that existed until 1947 was replaced by a paper factory. The move or the closure of the paper mill and the colored weaving mill led to a temporary noticeable decline in population after 2000.

reformed Church

The Seon parish church was first mentioned in 1408 in an Aarau document. In 1708 the building was completely rebuilt and received its current form. The church tower, which had been raised slightly in 1821, was demolished in 1856 and replaced by an even higher one; In 1899 the tower was given a pointed helmet instead of the previous onion helmet. The nave is slightly beveled on the east side.

There are numerous witnesses of industrial culture on the Aabach . These include the spinning mill built in 1823 and the cotton weaving mill built in 1834. The mill in the lower village was built in the late Gothic style as early as 1600 . After a renovation at the beginning of the 18th century, the mill was in operation until 1963. coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Three red balaclavas in white." The municipality bears the coat of arms of the extinct ministerial family of the Lords of Seon, which has been known in this form since 1344. Due to a misunderstanding, three acorn fruits could be seen on the municipal coat of arms from the 19th century. In 1923 the historically correct version was reintroduced.
