Pearl onions

The pearl onion ( Allium ampeloprasum pearl onion group, syn .: Allium porrum var. Sectivum ) belongs to the subfamily of the leek plants (Allioideae). It is a cultivated group of varieties of field leek ( Allium ampeloprasum ). Pearl onions reach a diameter of 15 to 35 mm and have a white to silvery shimmering outer skin.

The pearl onion and the silver onion look very similar, but they belong to two different botanical species .

Pearl onions were mainly grown in Germany, the Netherlands and Italy. They play no role in commercial cultivation.
