The Chlauschlöpfen (pronounced Chlaus-Chlöpfen ) is a pre-Christmas custom from the District Lenzburg ( Switzerland ), which has the purpose of the Santa Claus to awaken. Loud bangs are generated with the Chlaus flagellants , which can be heard throughout the village.
This custom is actively practiced in the communities of Ammerswil , Auenstein , Brunegg , Dintikon , Egliswil , Hallwil , Hausen bei Brugg , Hendschiken , Hunzenschwil , Lenzburg , Mägenwil , Möriken-Wildegg , Niederlenz , Othmarsingen , Rupperswil , Schafisheim , Seengen , Seon and Staufen .
history
From November to December the Chlaus flagellants are swung in the Lenzburg region when it gets dark . The Samichlaus in his cave should be awakened by the chopping. Because this takes a little longer according to tradition, he does not visit the children in the Lenzburg district on December 6th, but on the second Thursday in December ( Lenzburger Chlausmärt / Klausmarkt).

Historical background

“Once upon a time, Samichlaus , like every year on his name day, went down the many stairs to the city from his apartment in Goffersberg zu Lenzburg . The purpose of his annual outing was to make people happy and satisfied by bringing them good things and advice. But one year the glory was over, because bad boys scattered peas on the stairs that led to the apartment of Santa Claus. When he returned home tired and slowly late at night, he slipped, tumbled down the stairs and hurt all limbs. Angry and full of resentment, he thundered shut the door behind him and vowed that until the last day he would never make any more charity visits. The boys were sorry for their prank and wanted to ask St. Nicholas' forgiveness. However, they could not find the entrance to his apartment. Period
The chopping was originally started on November 11th, Martini's name day . Today the end of October is already g'chlöpft . In Egliswil, Seengen and Hallwil the season begins on the day of the Seenger autumn market (1st Tuesday in November). The practice is permitted up to the regional bets. The flagella then remain silent until the next season. For a number of years the following applies to dumpling: From November 1st to Sunday after Lenzburger Chlausmarkt (2nd Thursday in December), because then it is Samichlaus in the district of Lenzburg, elsewhere on December 6th. The flagella can also sound on very special occasions, but otherwise they should recover for the next season.
competition
Competitions are held in different communities. Each lecture lasts 30 seconds and is evaluated based on the regional regulations. The best three boys and the best girl, per category and location, are allowed to take part in the regional Chlöpf competition.
