Auenstein (older Gauenstein; in local dialect : [ ˈg̊æʊ̯əˌʒ̊tæɪ̯ ]) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Brugg district and around three kilometers northwest of Lenzburg an der Aare .

geography

The village lies between the northern bank of the Aare and the southern slope of the 772 meter high Gislifluh , an elevation of the southernmost chain of the Folded Jura . The slope, which is very steep in places, is mostly forested, but has several forest pastures. The Gisifluh merges towards the east into the increasingly flatter Veltheimerberg, on whose eastern slope there is a quarry . Barely one and a half kilometers east of Auenstein lies the district of Au ( 352  m above sea level ) with another 1 km² quarry. In the Aare there is a wooded island about two kilometers long and a maximum of fifty meters wide, which was created by alluvial debris.

The area of the municipality is 568 hectares , of which 257 hectares are covered with forest and 120 hectares are built over. The highest point is on the Gisifluh at 772 meters, the lowest at 350 meters on the Aare. The municipality of Auenstein is part of the Aargau Jura Park, a "Regional Nature Park of National Importance". Neighboring communities are Schinznach and Veltheim in the north, Möriken-Wildegg in the east, Rupperswil in the south, Biberstein in the west and Thalheim in the north-west.

history

The first reliable documented mention of the place name took place in 1299 ( Ůlr. Gowenstein ). It probably comes from a combination of the words ahd. Gawi / gewi / gowi , mhd. Göu (w) / gou (w) 'Gau, fertile land on the water' and stone 'stone, rock'. Around 1200 the small Auenstein Castle was built on the Aue . The builders are not known with certainty, probably it was the gentlemen von Gowenstein. The castle, which had come into the possession of the Lords of Reinach at the beginning of the 14th century , was burned down by the Bernese in 1389 during battles between the Confederates and the Habsburgs .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Auenstein now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern, the so-called Bernese Aargau . The village formed its own judicial district in the Lenzburg district , but did not belong to the city itself, but to wealthy Bernese families. In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . After Auenstein had changed hands several times, in 1732 the heirs of General Johann Ludwig von Erlach sold the entire property to the city of Bern, which thereby gained complete control of the village and then assigned it to the office of Kasteln .

This direct rule lasted only a few decades. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Auenstein has been part of the canton of Aargau since then. The viticulture , who had been in earlier centuries the main occupation of the population declined in the late 19th century because of the phylloxera epidemic almost to insignificance down, but can again recently experienced a boom.

For centuries the village was only connected to the right bank of the river by a ferry and a footbridge. This only changed in 1870 when the bridge to Wildegg was built. In 1942, at the same time as the Rupperswil-Auenstein hydropower plant , there was also a bridge over to Rupperswil . After 1950, Auenstein developed into an attractive residential community thanks to its south-facing slope. There has been a sharp increase in the number of inhabitants since 1990 in particular.

Attractions

The Auenstein Castle stands on a small rock by the river. After the castle was destroyed in 1389, the castle ruins came into the possession of the new canton in 1803. The canton later sold them to private individuals. The castle was made habitable again in 1858 by adding additional floors and was given its current castle-like shape in 1928/29.

The Reformed Church , built in Gothic and late Gothic styles, was first mentioned in a document in 1302, but foundations in Romanesque style from the 11th century exist . The choir in its current form dates from the late 15th century, the nave was enlarged in 1651. Exterior renovations were carried out in 1893 and 1943, and interior renovations in 1951/52 and 2004. Due to its poor condition, the church tower had to be thoroughly renovated in 1984.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "Split from red with two white roses with yellow clusters and green sepals and from white". The seal used since 1804 showed a little heraldic landscape representation. When various associations used the old coat of arms of the Lords of Gowenstein on their flags, the municipality had no choice but to introduce it in 1964.
