Scherz ( Swiss German : ʃæːrts ) is a village in the Swiss canton of Aargau , just under four kilometers south-southwest of Brugg . It belongs to the municipality of Lupfig in the Brugg district and was an independent municipality until December 31, 2017 .
geography
The village is located in a hollow on the western edge of the flat Birrfeld . The plain rises slightly to the north in the direction of Habsburg . In the far west it is bordered by an edge of the terrain where a slope drops steeply into the Aare valley. In the southwest rises the 508 meter high Scherzberg, which merges to the south into the Chestenberg , a foothill of the Folded Jura . The Süssbach , which feeds two former mill ponds, runs through the village . The area of the municipality was 330 hectares . The highest point of the former municipal area was an unnamed peak between Scherzberg and Chestenberg at an altitude of 541 meters, the lowest was at 387 meters on what was then the eastern municipality boundary. Neighboring communities were Habsburg in the north, Hausen in the northeast, Lupfig in the east, Holderbank in the south and Schinznach-Bad in the west.
history
Shernitz was first mentioned in a document in 1240, when the Habsburgs lent some goods to the Teutonic Knights in Hitzkirch . The place name is of old European origin; it is derived from Skarantia , which means "place with stony ground". In the Middle Ages , the village belonged to Eigenamt , the oldest possession of the Habsburgs, whose headquarters are in the immediate vicinity on the Wülpelsberg. In 1397 they transferred the land and court rule to the Königsfelden monastery in Windisch .
After the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates in 1415, the city of Bern took over the rule, the self-office was now part of the subject areas in the Bernese Aargau . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation and dissolved the Königsfelden monastery. They converted their own office to the Landvogtei Königsfelden and then exercised all rights. From the 16th century, Bohnerz was mined on the Scherzberg , which was then processed in the Albbruck ironworks . In 1770 ore mining had to be stopped due to exhaustion of the deposit. Numerous hollows, spoil heaps and accessible tunnels have been preserved to this day.
In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, disempowered the "Gänders" of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Scherz has been part of the canton of Aargau since then. The village remained agricultural until the middle of the 20th century. The number of inhabitants has doubled since 1950. The place developed from a farming community to a residential community. The municipality merged with Lupfig on January 1, 2018 .

coat of arms
The blazon of the former municipal coat of arms reads: "In white, a red heart from which one red and two yellow feathers grow." The meaning of the coat of arms, which was first used on the municipal seal in 1872, is unclear. On the one hand it is supposed to be a beet with cabbage (one of the most important crops of the local farmers), on the other hand it is interpreted as the heart of one of the forest brothers who ran a hermitage in the 14th century.

Scherz is located next to the cantonal road 399, which leads from Lupfig to Schinznach-Bad , whereby the through traffic bypasses the village center on its north side. Another road leads from Scherz via Habsburg to Brugg . To the north of the village is the east portal of the 1.5 kilometer long Habsburg tunnel on the A3 motorway . The next junction is two kilometers east of the village between Hausen and Lupfig. Scherz is the terminus of a post bus line that leads to Brugg train station .
