About this picture
w

Remigen ( Swiss German : ˈrɛmigə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Brugg district and is located about three kilometers north-northwest of the district capital.

geography

The village lies in the transition zone between the Folded Jura and the Tabular Jura in the northwest corner of the Rüfenach plain. In the north rises the Geissberg , which is part of the Table Jura. The community area only extends over the steep southern slope, while the extensive plateau belongs to Villigen . The southern slope of the Geissberg is an ideal wine-growing area . Two valleys extend to the west, separated by the Bützberg ( 647  m above sea level ), which belongs to the Folded Jura . The northern valley leads to the Bürersteig ( 550  m above sea level ), a pass crossing into the Upper Rhine Valley, the southern valley towards Mönthal . The community, drained by the Schmittenbach, is bordered in the far west by the 643 meter high Burghalden.

The area of the municipality is 787 hectares , of which 446 hectares are forested and 57 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 699 meters on the Geissberg, the lowest at 369 meters in the Rüfenach plain. Neighboring communities are Mettauertal in the north, Villigen in the northeast, Rüfenach in the southeast, Riniken and Bözberg in the south, Mönthal in the west and Gansingen in the northwest.

history

The road between Augusta Raurica and Vindonissa led over the Bözberg during Roman times . It ran a little further north than today, from Effingen via Remigen to Stilli . The first written mention of Ramingen took place in 1064. The place name comes from the Old High German Ramingun and means "among the people of Ramo". At that time the village was part of the Rein farm , which belonged to the Murbach monastery in Alsace (the term farm was used to refer to the manorial rule over a large area).

In the 13th century, the Habsburgs combined their sovereign rights west and north of Brugg in the Bözberg court. In addition to Remigen, this also included Oberbözberg , Unterbözberg , Lauffohr , Linn , Mönthal , Rein , Riniken , Rüfenach , Stilli and Villigen . In these villages the Habsburgs exercised blood jurisdiction , in Mönthal, Remigen and Villigen they also exercised lower jurisdiction . King Rudolf I bought the Rein Hof in 1291 and was not only the chief judge, but also the most important landlord. In 1345 Queen Agnes of Hungary donated the farm to the Wittichen monastery in the Kinzig valley . From 1348 the court changed hands several times through pledging and in 1377 it finally came under the rule of Schenkenberg .

When the city of Bern conquered the area west of the Aare in 1460 , nothing changed in the rights of the monastery. However, the nuns had to accept the introduction of the Reformation in 1528. In 1544 the monastery sold the Rein farm to Count Hartmann von Hallwyl . In 1566 the judicial district of Bözberg was separated and the court cases of the Rein court were now heard in Stilli. Between 1588 and 1599 the city of Brugg acquired two thirds of the farm and Bern the remaining third. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . The Rein farm now belonged to the canton of Aargau. In 1799 the front line ran through the middle of the lower Aare valley during the Second Coalition War . There were several French army camps in the region. The villagers suffered great hardship through requisitions and looting.

In 1803 the canton of Aargau dissolved Hof Rein and raised the individual villages to independent communities. Remigen was dominated by agriculture until well into the 20th century. The population stagnated at around 500 until around 1970. Then increased construction activity began and Remigen developed into a residential community; the number of inhabitants doubled within thirty years.

Attractions

Remigen Church
Tithing house

The Petruskirche was first mentioned in 1347 as a branch church of the parish Rein and probably dates from the 11th or 12th century. An extension followed around the middle of the 15th century, and the church tower was added a century later. The tower clock from 1535 has always had only one hour hand because the clockworks were still imprecise at that time. The clockwork made of iron comes from Laurentius Liechti from Winterthur. The pendulum of the church clock is 12 m long. The clock used to have to be wound up every day, today the clock and bells are electronically controlled. In the 19th and first half of the 20th century, the church was used as a wine-growing tool shed, poor apartment and for a short time even as a prison. The first renovation took place in 1957/58 and the second in 1999.

The tithing house of Hof Rein, still preserved today, was inhabited by a Habsburg knight family.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "White ibex jumping in red on a green three-mountain." The coat of arms corresponds to that of the Lords of Remigen, a Habsburg ministerial family that died out around 1300 . The municipality first used the ibex coat of arms on the official seal in 1750.
