geography

The Geissberg is located northwest of the moated castle , as the confluence of the Aare , Reuss and Limmat rivers is called. The communities of Hottwil , Mandach , Villigen and Remigen are located on the Geissberg. The Geissberg region also includes the villages Mönthal , Rüfenach , Stilli and Riniken . The Geissberg wine-growing region also includes Gansingen and the villages of the Mettauertal community , although vineyards are only grown in Wil and Mettau . Historically, the Geissberg belongs to the Bözberg region and also to the Bözberg district, which extended to Bözen .

Limestone is mined on the northern flank of the Geissberg. Viticulture is practiced on its southern slopes.

Special

One of the special features of the Geissberg is a large colony of chamois that inhabit the area. This colony of chamois is the only one in the Canton of Aargau , along with the one in the Wasserflue area . Contrary to many hopes, it has remained isolated in the last few decades, but has at least spread to the Iberg and the Bruggerberg . Since the stock has allegedly caused damage in recent years, the chamois, which is actually protected in the canton of Aargau (with restrictions), was released for shooting.

The 145 meter high radio tower was built in 1993.

The Besserstein ruins are located above Villigen .

At the Rütifels above Remigen there is a system of tunnels around 300 m long.

Fortifications

Various military installations exist on the Geissberg. From the time of the Second World War , the Besserstein artillery plant is located above Villigen near the Besserstein ruins, and the Geissberg artillery plant above the Bürersteig, very close to the radio tower . The water supply for the two artillery works was previously ensured by Remigen. The riser led from Lochgraben to the Cholrüti area on the Geissberg Plateau, then from there from the building that still exists today in both directions east and west to the two artillery works. On the Platenau from Geissberg, various firing aisles can still be seen, which date from the time of the Second World War.
