Mettauertal ( Swiss German : ˈmætəbərtɑːl ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Laufenburg district and is located in the northeast of the Fricktal region on the border with Germany , around five kilometers east of the district capital. Mettauertal was created in 2010 through the merger of the municipalities Etzgen , Hottwil , Mettau , Oberhofen and Wil . With an area of over 21 km², this municipality is the largest in the canton in terms of area.

In a geographical sense, Mettauertal is a valley through which the Etzgerbach and the Mettauerbach flow. At the upper end of the Mettauerbach is Gansingen , which has not merged with the other communities.

geography

The community is located in the middle of the Tafeljura between the Aare and Rhine valleys and consists of five villages and several scattered hamlets and individual farms. The main drain is the Etzgerbach . It rises near Hottwil ( 415  m above sea level ), then flows in a north-westerly and westerly direction through Wil ( 381  m above sea level ) and Mettau ( 347  m above sea level ), passes Etzgen ( 336  m above sea level). ) and flows into the Rhine. Oberhofen ( 364  m above sea level ) lies in a side valley on the Mettauerbach; this flows in a northerly direction and flows into the Etzgerbach near Mettau.

The villages in the valley floor are surrounded by hills on all sides. As a rule, these rise steeply in the lower area and merge into slightly rising plateaus. Only at Hottwil are the gradients largely even. To the north of Etzgen, the narrow bank strip along the Rhine expands to form a plain up to 500 meters wide. The most important elevations are Ebni ( 505  m above sea level ) near Etzgen, Ischlag ( 508  m above sea level ) and Egghalde ( 566  m above sea level ) near Mettau, Weisstannenkopf ( 566  m above sea level ), Ebnet ( 535  m above sea level ) and Obere Rüti ( 605  m above sea level ) near Wil, Meiershalde ( 562  m above sea level ) near Oberhofen and Laubberg ( 649  m above sea level ), Hottwilerhorn ( 646  m above sea level ) . ), Wessenberg ( 605  m above sea level ) and Beiberg ( 585  m above sea level ) near Hottwil.

The area of the municipality is 2159 hectares , of which 872 hectares are forested and 165 hectares are built over. Mettauertal is thus the largest municipality in the canton of Aargau in terms of area. The highest point is the summit of the Laubberg, the lowest point is at 300  m above sea level. M. on the Rhine southwest of Etzgen. The municipality of Mettauertal is part of the Aargau Jura Park, a “Regional Nature Park of National Importance”. Neighboring communities are Schwaderloch in the north, Leibstadt in the northeast, Leuggern and Mandach in the east, Villigen in the southeast, Remigen in the south, Gansingen in the southwest and Laufenburg in the west. In the northwest, Mettauertal borders the German communities Albbruck and Laufenburg (Baden) in the state of Baden-Württemberg .

history

Former Untervogtei in Hottwil

A gold coin found in Mettau in 1922 indicates that there was a path from Vindonissa through the Mettauertal to the Rhine during Roman times . During the 4th century, the Rhine formed the northern border of the Roman Empire. The Legio VIII Augusta built three watchtowers near Etzgen in 371, of which, however, no traces have been preserved. The Alemanni settled in the region from the 5th century .

Four of the five villages were first mentioned in documents in the Middle Ages (Hottwil 1150, Mettau 1254, Wil 1318, Etzgen 1448). In the villages of Etzgen, Mettau and Wil the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg exercised the state rule, from 1386 the older line of the Habsburgs . From 1468 the villages were pledged to the Burgundians , but came back to Front Austria in 1477 . Austrian rule ended in 1797 with the occupation of the Fricktal by French troops. From February 1802, the region formed the canton of Fricktal , which joined the Helvetic Republic in August and thus became Swiss. The history of Hottwil took a different course: The Habsburgs pledged the village in 1316 to the Lords of Wessenberg . During the Waldshut War , the village was conquered by the Bernese , who also introduced the Reformation in 1528 . Until the French conquest in 1798, Hottwil was in the Bernese Aargau .

The village of Oberhofen was built around 1800 as an extension. In 1803, the year the canton of Aargau was founded, Wil, Oberhofen and Etzgen belonged to the municipality of Mettau. Wil immediately formed an independent municipality, Oberhofen followed in 1832, Etzgen a year later. Hottwil has always been independent; In contrast to the other municipalities, it did not belong to the Laufenburg district , but to the Brugg district . Although individual industrial companies settled in Etzgen after the Koblenz – Stein-Säckingen railway line opened in 1892, the communities in Etzgerbach and Mettauerbach remained largely agricultural and developed into residential communities in the second half of the 20th century.

On March 20, 2008, the municipal assemblies of Etzgen, Hottwil, Mettau, Oberhofen and Wil decided to merge to form the Mettauertal municipality. This decision was confirmed by clear majorities in the polls on June 1, 2008. The merger took place on January 1, 2010, the administration of the new municipality is located in Mettau. The municipality of Gansingen, which was initially also involved in the merger project, had clearly rejected the merger on September 21, 2007, whereupon the other municipalities worked out a new (and ultimately successful) project.

The assembly of those entitled to vote, the municipal assembly , exercises legislative power. The executing authority is the seven-member municipal council . He is elected by the people in the majority procedure, his term of office is four years. The parish council leads and represents the parish. To this end, it implements the resolutions of the municipal assembly and the tasks assigned to it by the canton. The District Court of Laufenburg is the first instance responsible for legal disputes . Mettauertal belongs to the Friedensrichterkreis X (Mettau).

economy

The industrial jobs are concentrated in Etzgen, where the metal processing industry is represented by several companies. The four remaining villages are characterized by agriculture and commerce. Many people in employment are commuters and work in the larger communities in the Fricktal and the lower Aare Valley .

The viticulture is of great importance, with most of the vineyards concentrated in the southern slope of the Ebnet above Mettau and on the western slopes of the Wessenberg's above Hottwil. In contrast, the cultivation areas in Etzgen and Oberhofen are minimal. In 2018, an area of 15.1 hectares was planted with vines. traffic

According to the geographic conditions of the community, the traffic routes are aligned on three main axes. Hauptstrasse 7 and the Koblenz – Stein-Säckingen railway line run through the industrial zone of Etzgen along the Rhine . From Etzgen, Kantonsstrasse 277 runs via Mettau, Oberhofen, Gansingen and further on over the Bürersteig in the direction of Brugg . The canton road 444 branches off southeast of Mettau, which opens up Wil and Hottwil and meets the canton road to Brugg on the Bürersteig. Side streets connect Hottwil with Gansingen, Mandach and Villigen .

From Laufenburg , where there is a connection to the Basel S-Bahn , the municipality is served by two postbus lines. The first line leads via Etzgen and Leibstadt to Döttingen , the second connects all the villages in the municipality and continues to Brugg train station . The Rhine Valley railway line, including Etzgen station, has been closed for passenger traffic between Laufenburg and Koblenz since 1994 . Like all communities in the Laufenburg district, Mettauertal belongs to the Northwestern Switzerland tariff association .

education

In the villages of Etzgen and Wil there is a school house with a primary school and a kindergarten . The school locations in Hottwil and Mettau were closed in 2006; in Oberhofen this step took place at the end of the 2009/10 school year. The district school , the secondary school and the Realschule can be attended in the Blauen school center in Laufenburg . The closest grammar schools are in Aarau ( old canton school and new canton school ); Due to an intercantonal agreement, young people from parts of the Fricktal can also complete the grammar school in Muttenz ( Canton Basel-Landschaft ) or in Basel .
