history

Individual finds, such as the ruins of a building complex discovered in 1963, suggest that the area around today's village was already settled by the Romans . The complex had an inner courtyard and bathing facilities, possibly a rest stop ( mansio ) on the road between Vindonissa and Augusta Raurica .

Munchwille was first mentioned in a document in 1306 in the Habsburg land register . About 200 years earlier, a hermitage is said to have been built around today's Ursula's chapel by monks from the nearby Säckingen monastery . This is reflected in the meaning of the village name, which is Munihwilari in Old High German ("Hofsiedlung der Mönche"). The Habsburgs pledged after Waldshuterstrasse War of 1468, the entire Fricktal of Burgundy . When the Burgundians were defeated by the Confederates during the Burgundian Wars , Münchwilen came under Austrian rule again in 1477.

After the imperial reform of the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I in 1491, Münchwilen belonged to Upper Austria and was located in the Fricktal region, a subordinate administrative unit of the Rheinfelden cameramen (from 1752 in the Upper Office of Breisgau ). In the 17th century there were hardly any longer times of peace. The Rappenkrieg , a peasant uprising, lasted from 1612 to 1614. The Thirty Years War , which also affected the Fricktal between 1633 and 1638, threw the village back in its economic development. Foreign troops also moved through the region during the War of the Palatinate Succession (1688–1697).

In 1797 the Fricktal became a French protectorate after the Peace of Campo Formio . During the Second Coalition War , the front line between the armies of France and Austria ran here . On February 20, 1802, Münchwilen became a municipality in the Frick district of the Fricktal canton , which joined the Helvetic Republic in August . Sebastian Fahrländer , a doctor from Ettenheim , was granted citizenship of Münchwilen in 1798 and appointed himself governor of this short-lived canton. The municipality has belonged to the canton of Aargau since February 19, 1803.

The Bözberg Railway was opened on August 2, 1875, and the railway line to Koblenz , which was opened on August 1, 1892, branches off immediately north of the village center. But the train station is in the neighboring municipality of Stein , and so Münchwilen remained an agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century. Due to the settlement of industrial companies in Sisslerfeld, the population doubled between 1950 and 1980, but has remained stable since then.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: «Monk striding in blue with hat, habit with hood, belt and sandals (all brown), holding a white pilgrim's staff turned outwards in his right hand; Face, hands and feet are white. " When the church in Eiken was rebuilt in 1873, a pane of glass with the Münchwilens coat of arms was used, showing a monk with a black robe in white. Later, however, the monk appeared in an unfavorable color combination, since the brown violates the color rules of heraldry . The municipal meeting in 2002 rejected the cleanup proposed by the State Archives .
