List of train stations in Switzerland |
Stein-Säckingen is a train station in Switzerland . The station is located in the municipality of Stein in the canton of Aargau . The appendix "Säckingen" was added because of the German Bad Säckingen on the other side of the Rhine and to distinguish it from other places called Stein in Switzerland; it is not a border station .
history
The station is a branch station and is located on the Bözberg route of the Swiss Federal Railways between Basel and Zurich . It was opened together with the Pratteln – Brugg (Bözberglinie) railway on August 2, 1875 as a through station. In connection with the opening of the Koblenz – Stein-Säckingen railway on August 1, 1892, it was converted into a separation station .
Operational
The station is served by the S1 line of the Basel S-Bahn . Here the line divides into a branch to Frick and a single-lane branch to Laufenburg . Interregio trains also stop from Basel to Zurich.
Most freight trains over the Gotthard pass through this station, as the Bözberg route is the main access axis from the Muttenz marshalling yard to the Gotthard. The trains between Muttenz marshalling yard and Limmattal marshalling yard also usually pass through this station. The route to Koblenz is used by some freight trains; these are mostly tank trucks to the fuel stores in Glattbrugg and Rekingen; however, there are also infeeds and removals to Full, Leibstadt, Laufenburg and Sisseln.
The station has a total of 9 tracks, of which only tracks 2 to 6 can be used for train journeys. Train journeys in the direction of Frick and Sisseln / Laufenburg are possible from all of these tracks.
Tracks 1 and 7 to 9 can only be used by shunting trips and have no track vacancy detection devices. To the east of track 1, there is a manual switch area that is used for so-called free loading. In addition, there is also a company that specializes in the scrapping of old railway wagons. For this reason, old coaches are often parked at Stein-Säckingen station, from which the interior is removed.
A siding to the companies JAKEM and Syngenta branches off about a kilometer east of the station building, but still in the station area.
The station is controlled by an electronic signal box of the Simis W type. The Sisseln and Laufenburg stations are also controlled via the same signal box. The system is equipped with type N main signals.
At the station there is a substation in which traction current is fed from the transmission line coming from Rupperswil into the overhead lines .
Accidents
In 1991, in the area of the station, when a freight train was passing through and was loaded with gasoline, a cistern wagon derailed and the wagons that followed. A few wagons leaked and a major fire broke out. Although this accident did not result in death or serious injuries, it is one of the most serious accidents involving dangerous goods in modern times on Swiss railways (alongside Au SG , 1989, and Zurich-Affoltern , 1994).
