history

Aerial view (1954)

Birharth was first mentioned in a document in 1254. The place name comes from the Old High German Birichahard and means "birch forest". The village was probably already inhabited by the Alamanni in the 8th century , because in 1925 a grave with grave goods from that time came to light. In the Middle Ages, Birrhard belonged to the Eigenamt , the oldest possession of the Habsburgs , whose headquarters are only a few kilometers away on the Wülpelsberg. In 1397 they transferred the land and judicial rule to the Königsfelden monastery in Windisch .

After the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates in 1415, the city of Bern took over the rule, the self-office was now part of the subject areas in the Bernese Aargau . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation and dissolved the Königsfelden monastery. They converted their own office to the Landvogtei Königsfelden and then exercised all rights. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Birrhard has belonged to the canton of Aargau. The eastern and southern neighboring communities have also been part of it since 1803, after the canton of Baden was dissolved and the French withdrew.

Birrhard remained an agricultural village until the middle of the 20th century . From 1850 to 1960 the population fell by over a third. The upswing began when numerous industrial companies settled in the neighboring communities of Birr and Mägenwil and in the 1970s a new zoning system in Birrhard led to the creation of two single-family house quarters. Since then, the population has more than doubled.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red over a wavy silver shield base, torn green pear tree with yellow fruits." The coat of arms first appeared in a similar form on the municipal seal in 1872. Today's revised design came about as a result of a school competition in 1965.
