Veltheim (the V is pronounced like F; Swiss German : ˈfæltːə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Brugg district and is located just six kilometers southwest of the district capital.

geography

The village lies on a plain at the exit of the Schenkenberger Valley , around one kilometer from the banks of the Aare . In the south of the municipality rises the 572 meter high Veltheimerberg, divided by three small valleys, a foothill of the Folded Jura . The Veltheimerberg goes west into the up to 772 meters Gislifluh . Wildenstein Castle stands on a ledge on the eastern slope . In turn, there are three extensive quarries on the southern slope . A little more than two kilometers south of the village, on the banks of the Aare, lies the district of Au ( 352  m above sea level ).

The area of the municipality is 524 hectares , of which 173 hectares are forested and 88 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 700 meters on the ridge of the Gisifluh, the lowest at 340 meters on the banks of the Aare. The municipality of Veltheim is part of the Aargau Jura Park, a "Regional Nature Park of National Importance". Neighboring communities are Schinznach in the northwest, Brugg in the northeast, Holderbank in the east, Möriken-Wildegg in the southeast and Auenstein in the south.

history

The earliest traces of settlement date from the Bronze Age . From the 1st to the 3rd century there was a Roman manor that supplied the Vindonissa legionary camp with food. The village is thought to have originated around the 6th or 7th century when Alemannic settlers settled in the area. Veltein was first mentioned in a document in 1261. The place name comes from the Old High German fëldheim and means "field residence". The oldest remaining part of the church dates from the 11th century.

At the beginning of the 13th century, Wildenstein Castle was built around one and a half kilometers south on a rocky outcrop . Like the village, it was owned by the Lords of Reinach , a family of ministers in the service of the Habsburgs . In 1415 the city of Bern conquered the western part of the Aargau along with the Wildenstein rulership. From 1460 Veltheim formed a judicial district within the Landvogtei Schenkenberg . After giving up the castle Schenkenberg Wildenstein Castle was from 1720 the seat of the Bernese bailiff . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Veltheim has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

In the second half of the 19th century, agriculture and viticulture lost their importance, which forced many residents to emigrate overseas. In the 20th century Veltheim changed from a farming village to a workers' village. Numerous industrial companies settled here, predominantly the manufacture of shoes, clothing, cement and building materials. Veltheim experienced particularly strong growth in the 1960s, when the population increased by more than 40%. Since a phase of stagnation in the 1970s, it has risen again by more than a third.

On April 5, 2009, the voters of Veltheim clearly rejected a planned merger with the neighboring communities of Oberflachs , Schinznach-Dorf , Schinznach-Bad and Villnachern to form the new community of Schenkenberg , while the other communities agreed.

Attractions

The baroque Wildenstein Castle stands on a protruding hill about one and a half kilometers south of the village. It is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. The system has the shape of an irregular square. The two keep, the curtain wall, the hall and the utility building are grouped around the inner courtyard.

The first parish church was built from the ruins of the former Roman estate. A successor building in Romanesque style was built around 1040 . After the Reformation the church became more and more dilapidated and was finally replaced in 1760 by the Reformed Church Veltheim , which still exists today . The rectory was built in 1681/83 and was rebuilt in 1783 in the late Baroque style. The church district is supplemented by the two late Gothic "Pfaffenhäuser" from around 1650.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In blue on a green hill, a yellow armored white rooster with a red comb and beard, overlaid by a six-pointed white star." The oldest known depiction can be found on a fire bucket from 1789. On the community seal of 1811, the rooster was temporarily on a branch, in 1872 the star was added. The rooster was natural-colored until 1926, but was then given a white, heraldically correct plumage. In 2002 the beak color changed from red to yellow; according to heraldic rules, the beak, legs and feet must be of the same color.
