The Gisliflue (name according to the Swiss national map , also Gislifluh) is 772  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Kettenjura in the Swiss canton of Aargau , which forms the eastern summit of a chain that rises north of the Aare and extends east to the Aareknie near Wildegg .

Location and name

The Gisliflue lies between Auenstein and Biberstein in the south and Thalheim in the north. There is a triangulation point on the summit .

An early name of the Gisliflue was Balder , after the Germanic sun god, later Sandsteinfluh. The current name refers to a blessed woman named Gisela, who allegedly lived in Veltheim.

The mountain

The mountain is forested on the south ridge and separated from the plateau on the north side by a steep rock face. The ridge extends from the summit over the Hintere Fluh to the Veltheimerberg.

Since the rocky area immediately around the summit is only sparsely overgrown in contrast to the surroundings, you have an almost 360 ° panoramic view from above. When the weather is nice, practically the entire Alpine arc can be seen, with the Säntis in the east, the Glarner and Urner Alps with the Titlis and the Bernese Alps with their striking 4000m peaks. The Baldegger and Hallwilersee as well as the Aare valley are also in view . In the north the view falls over the Schenkenbergertal to the ruins of Schenkenberg on the Black Forest with the Feldberg .

The mountain is made up of rocks from the main roe rock , which plunge into the north as a large plate at around 20 ° and submerge under the rocks of the Mittelland Molasse . The Hauptrogenstein-Platte adjoins the south wing of the Thalheim syncline with a thrust .

Special

Below the Gisliflue in the municipality of Thalheim, hidden deep in the forest, you will find the so-called "Erdwib" caves. It is a small cave formation, which consists of a small and a large cave.

In the 1950s, remnants of the wall were found on the northern flank of the Gisliflue near Thalheim. At that time it was unclear whether it was a Bernese high watch or a chapel. Around the Gisliflue there are many myths of witches and other characters and also of Saint Gisela.

Every year on the morning of the ascent dozens of people climb the Gislifluh to marvel at the sunrise. This is a tradition especially in Thalheim.

The Teehüsli is a rest stop for hikers, around 20 minutes from the Gislifluh car park.

Cement industry

The canton of Aargau and the Jura Cement company evaluated the area as a possible mining site for raw materials for the cement industry. On June 10, 2014, representatives of the canton and the company as well as the municipal councils of Auenstein , Schinznach and Veltheim signed a letter of intent that these plans will not be pursued.
