Surname

Today's place-name sign reads in capital letters "Au" (without additional letters), including in small letters "Auenstein" and "Veltheim". This is the usual spelling in Switzerland for dependent places, whereby community names in lower case do not belong to the place name.

history

The construction of the Auhof, which formed the core of today's settlement, probably goes back to the revival of the ferry service by the Wildenstein castle rule. Although the Meierhof was in the Twing Auenstein, the farm area itself was mostly on Veltheimer Boden or in the area of the Landvogtei Schenkenberg . The place becomes tangible in 1472 when the "Meier in der Ouw" is mentioned. The settlement emerged from a Steckhof and was distributed to the two communities when the canton of Aargau was founded. Due to the jurisdiction border between the Twin Auenstein and the Landvogtei Schenkenberg, the drawing of the municipality border was not really controversial here, the jurisdiction border became the municipality border. What belonged to Twin Auenstein came to the municipality of Auenstein, the rest to the municipality of Veltheim. The two old Aumeierhöfe were in the area of the Twin Auenstein, and the owners were already citizens of Auenstein.

A house was built on Veltheimer Boden in 1794, followed by a farmhouse in 1800. The settlement was only able to develop when the river correction was completed in 1872, because this meant that the joint obligation, such as the river barriers, which were linked to the right to use goods, could be eliminated. For example, the common goods in Auschachen could be divided into 28 parcels in 1879 and distributed to 12 beneficiaries.
