The Seon school is a school in Seon in the Swiss canton of Aargau . The school offers kindergarten , primary and secondary schools. The main location is Oberdorfstrasse with the three school buildings Hertimatt 1, 2 and 3. The kindergarten is housed in five buildings at four locations.

History and architecture

The first school lesson is said to have been held in Seon in a small house with a thatched roof, which stood south of the church on today's school premises - the current Hertimatt campus. This little thatched roof house no longer exists. In 1771 the old school building was built east of the church. This schoolhouse with the current address at Oberdorfstrasse 16 was single-story at the time of construction and had only one classroom. In 1809 the old school house was added to by the community and now had three classrooms and a meeting room for the community council. With the completion of the Seetalstrasse School in 1841, the school use of the old school building, which is now a listed residential building, ended.

Seetalschulhaus, used by the Seon School from 1841 to 2013

In 1837 the decision was made to build a new school because the old school building had become too small. The new school building with the current address Seetalstrasse 26 measured 24 × 12 m and originally had two floors. It was decided to add another floor while the building was still going on. The new school building was inaugurated in 1841. In 1929 a rear extension with three more classrooms was built. In 2013, the use of the listed Seetalstrasse School for school purposes ended. The Seetalschulhaus was built in the late classical style. The elongated building under a barely protruding gable roof has a plastered facade that is strictly symmetrically structured by seven window axes . The classrooms are accessed through aisles . The cornices and portal are made of shell limestone . According to the building inventory of the Aargau Cantonal Preservation of Monuments, the schoolhouse "forms a harmonious unit of significant architectural and local historical importance" in terms of its "external appearance and spatial concept". Due to its exposed location, "the distinctive structure is also of considerable importance for the townscape".

Community and school house, since 1970 only community hall

In 1860 a district school was opened in Seon , the lessons of which took place on the third floor of the school building on Seetalstrasse. Due to the growing number of students, the community decided in 1898 to build a new community hall with district school rooms on the first floor. An attached gym was also planned. The building was erected between Mitteldorf and Oberdorf, today's address is Oberdorfstrasse 11. The design for the building was probably made by Karl Moser . The school's use of the listed building ended in 1970 with the construction of the new district school on the Hertimatt, which today only serves as a community hall.

In 1970 the Hertimatt 1 school building was built. The Hertimatt 2 school building was completed in 1991 and expanded in 2004. During the expansion, the main axis of the existing building was lengthened by the width of a classroom.

In 2011 the decision was made to build a new building for the lower school instead of renovating the Seetalschule. The municipality approved a budget of just under 10 million francs for this. The Hertimatt 3 schoolhouse was completed in 2016. The three-storey house with a flat roof and light clinker facade is not very structured from the outside in its simple cube shape. The center of the building is an open stairwell. The building, which has no basement, is built on stilts. The school and community library, which has a separate entrance, is located in one part of the ground floor.

Library

The Seon School and Community Library , housed in the school, is a general public library that is part of the Seon Community's cultural and educational offerings . The library was founded in 1988 as a community library by private individuals. Initially, the library was located in a civil defense facility , from 1992 in a pavilion between the Hertimatt 1 and 2 school buildings . In 2016 the library moved to its current location. Since it was founded in 2011, the library has been one of the porters of the Seetal Literature Ship .
