Stauf ( mhd. Stouf , ahd. Stouf, stoupf ) is an outdated term for a mug , goblet or beer mug . A stauf can be made of ceramic, precious metal or glass. After the German dictionary of the brothers Grimm , the old word is Stauf for a drinking vessel from the Germanic * staupa emerged and later by those from the Latin -derived loan words cup and cup displaced. In addition to Stauf , the spelling Stauff or stauff was also historically common.

A Stauf glass is according to the German dictionary a beer glass, in contrast to the wine glass. In Switzerland, the name Stauf-Humpen is used for a large jug .

With Regenstauf also a was Hohlmaß designated variable size depending on the region and time period. In the Weistum von Lemen and Gondorf (1516) there is a stauff weins as a quantity of wine. The minor form Staufe was only used for this meaning.
