Fall and driver protest
Shortly before the finish of the fourth stage, there was a fall at the front of the field after the sprinters Mark Cavendish and Heinrich Haussler , who were in the lead, drove in front of Gerald Ciolek from left and right at the same time and got caught in each other. As a result of this fall, Haussler (deep flesh wound), Arnaud Coyot (forearm fracture) and Lloyd Mondory had to give up the tour. Cavendish was downgraded to last place in the stage ranking by the race management for leaving the driving line - which in the opinion of the race management had caused the fall - and was given a time penalty of 30 seconds, a deduction of 25 points for the points assessment and a fine of 200 Swiss francs.
Before the start of the next stage, riders from the teams Cervélo , Caisse d'Epargne and ag2r La Mondiale protested against Cavendish's driving style with a blockade.
