Wouter "Wout" Poels (born October 1, 1987 in Venray ) is a Dutch cyclist .
Athletic career
Wout Poels began his career in 2006 with the Dutch Continental Team Fondas-P3Transfer . In his second year there, he was tenth overall at the Vuelta a Extremadura . In the 2008 season Poels came third at Rund um Düren and at the Volta Ciclista Internacional a Lleida . At the Vuelta Ciclista a León , he won the overall standings. In 2011 the Dutchman finished second on the difficult 14th stage of the Angliru and finally came 17th in the overall standings.
At the Tour de France 2012 he had a hard crash on the 6th stage . His spleen and kidney tears and his lungs were crushed. However, at the end of September 2012 he was able to start training again. His uncle Marijn Poels , a documentary filmmaker, shot the film Retour Poels on behalf of the regional broadcaster L1 about his comeback , for which he started filming immediately after Wout Poels had removed the last hoses.
After his fall, he won a stage of the Tour de l'Ain 2013 and switched to Omega Pharma-Quick Step the following year . In 2014 he won a stage of the Tour of the Basque Country .
After just one season, he signed a contract with the British team Sky in 2015 . At Tirreno-Adriatico he won the 4th stage after attacking on the last climb and crossing the finish line alone after the descent. He helped team-mate Chris Froome with his second victory in the Tour de France , won the 5th stage of the Tour of Britain and was second overall, 13 seconds behind, and at the end of the season Poels was third in the Abu Dhabi Tour .
In 2016 he won the individual time trial, a stage and finally the overall standings at the Tour of Valencia . In the Tour of Catalonia he won the 5th stage after a solo attack 15 kilometers from the finish from a breakaway group. He was also fourth at Flèche Wallonne , four days later at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the greatest success of his career after the Dutchman beat Michael Albasini , Rui Costa and Samuel Sanchez in the final sprint . Furthermore, he started again in the Tour de France as a helper for Froome, at the end of the season Poels decided another stage of the Tour of Britain for himself.
In 2017 he started the Tour of Spain as domestics for Kapitan Chris Froome and was second again on the 20th stage, after having finished second at the top of the Angliru six years earlier, this time accompanied by Froome, who later won the tour.
In 2018 he won a stage in the Tour of Andalusia and came second in the overall standings. He also won the individual time trial at Paris – Nice and helped Froome win the Giro d'Italia . In addition, he won another stage in the Tour of Britain .
