Paris – Nice
The Paris – Nice road bike race , also known as the Race to the Sun , is considered the first important stage race of the cycling season and was part of the UCI ProTour from 2005 to 2007 , a series of the most important stage and one-day races of the year. The French race has been part of the UCI WorldTour successor series since 2011 .
The week-long bicycle race is in March, in time parallel to the Italian race Tirreno-Adriatico , in the south of France held. It was founded by Albert Lejeune, the director of the “Petit Journal” and took place for the first time in 1933. Today the race is organized by the Amaury Sport Organization , which also organizes the Tour de France . In analogy to the Tour de France, the leader of the overall classification will be wearing the yellow jersey (maillot jaune) , the leader of the points classification will be wearing the green jersey (maillot vert) and the leader of the mountain classificationawarded the dotted jersey (maillot à pois) . The best young driver can wear the white jersey (maillot blanc) .
In the meantime, the start is no longer in Paris , but in the Paris area. The profile of the stage race can be described as relatively difficult for the early part of the season, as several mountain stages with climbs of the first category are on the program. The last stage was often a mountain time trial from Nice to the Col d'Èze or ends in Nice on the Promenade des Anglais .
The event in 2020 was shortened by one stage due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was the last cycle race in Europe in the first half of 2020.
With seven wins in a row in the 1980s, Irishman Sean Kelly is the record winner of Paris – Nice.
