The 71st long-distance cycle trip from Paris to Nice took place from March 3 to 10, 2013. The stage race is part of the UCI WorldTour and was within this the second race after the Tour Down Under . The total distance of the race was 1174 kilometers. As in 2012, the race ended with a mountain time trial on the Col d'Èze .

The 19 ProTeams as well as the French Professional Continental teams Cofidis , Team Europcar , Saur-Sojasun and the Swiss Team IAM Cycling , who received a wildcard from the organizer, were entitled to start. Among the 184 drivers, Andreas Klöden was only one of the earlier winners.
Favorites
Since most of the top drivers did not make a start this year, there were numerous favorites for the overall victory. In the fight for the coveted Maillot Jaune , Robert Gesink , Jakob Fuglsang , Tejay van Garderen , Ivan Basso , Mikel Nieve , Thomas De Gendt , Maxime Monfort and Denis Menschow were named as favorites.
Stages
As in the previous year, the "Race to the Sun" began with a prologue, which this time was carried out 15 km northeast of Paris in Houilles . This was followed by two relatively flat sections to the south. On the next two stages, the riders had to cross several mountains in the Massif Central before the queen stage ended on March 8th with a first category finish on the Montagne de Lure . The drivers reached Nice on the penultimate stage . As in the previous year, the race was decided by a mountain time trial on the Col d'Èze.

Ratings in the course of the tour
Time credits for the overall ranking were given to the first three drivers when they reached the finish (10, 6 and 4s) and intermediate sprints (3, 2 and 1s).
Points for the sprint there was at target arrivals for the first 20 drivers (25, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) and for intermediate sprints for the first three drivers (3, 2, 1).
Depending on the difficulty of the ascent, a different number of points were awarded for the mountain rating at the mountain peaks : 1st category (10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2 and 1), 2nd category (7, 5, 3, 2, 1) and 3rd category (4, 2, 1).
All drivers born after January 1st, 1988 fought for the white jersey of the best young professional.
For the team classification , the time of the best three drivers of a team was added up at each stage.
The table shows the leader in the respective classification after the respective stage.
Race course and result
Richie Porte was the first Australian winner from Paris-Nice. As in the previous year, the winner came from the British SKY team . By winning the 5th stage on the Montagne de Lure , the Australian was able to win the yellow jersey of Andrew Talansky , which he did not give up until the end. On the final ascent of the 5th stage, Talansky tried several times unsuccessfully to break away from the group with the favorites. When Porte attacked about 1.5 km from the finish, no driver could follow and he won the stage with a 26-second lead over Russian Denis Menshov . With the victory in Nice on the 6th stage, Sylvain Chavanel was able to conquer the green jersey, which he was able to defend until the end. He prevailed against Philippe Gilbert in the final sprint of the main field of 59 drivers . The final mountain time trial on the Col d'Èze was won by Richie Porte, who also secured the overall victory. Talansky came in second both on the Col d'Èze and in the overall standings. He was also the best junior long-distance driver. Dominik Nerz , as the best German in this ranking, came in 6th place, 1:38 minutes behind. Johann Tschopp from the Swiss Continental Team IAM Cycling won the mountain classification . The best German was the winner of 2000 Andreas Klöden with a gap of 2:22 minutes in 9th place.
