history
Two personalities have shaped the history of the place. The first was St. Julien , a Roman soldier who professed Christianity and allegedly martyred here in the 3rd century . The place then advanced to a place of pilgrimage , from which it benefited especially in the Middle Ages under Gregory of Tours , who also reported that the last resting place of the Western Roman Emperor Avitus (455–456) is said to have been here.
In the middle of the 18th century it was the robber Louis Mandrin from the Dauphiné who carried out some of his dubious business here.
Attractions
The most important attraction of the place is the actually outstanding Basilica of St. Julien , which is predominantly of Romanesque origin. This can already be seen in the outer shape of the crouched towers, but even more so in the round arches and Moorish red-and-white-striped columns inside the church . Interesting mediaeval frescoes can be found on the gallery , although they date from the Gothic period.
The old town also has some picturesque houses from the Middle Ages.
Sports
In 2013, Brioude was the destination of the 4th stage of the 71st long-distance bike ride Paris – Nice .
