It is located in the department of Haute-Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (before 2016 Auvergne ) and belongs to Arrondissement Brioude and the Canton Pays de Lafayette (2015 Paulhaguet ).

La Chomette is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Lavaudieu in the north, Domeyrat in the northeast, Paulhaguet in the east and southeast, Salzuit in the south, Saint-Privat-du-Dragon in the west and southwest and Vieille-Brioude in the west and northwest.
