Vieille-Brioude is located about 44 kilometers northwest of Le Puy-en-Velay on the Allier River , into which the Senouire and Ceroux flow here. Vieille-Brioude is surrounded by the neighboring communities Brioude in the north, Fontannes in the northeast, Lavaudieu in the east, La Chomette in the southeast, Saint-Privat-du-Dragon , Saint-Ilpize and Villeneuve-d'Allier in the south, Saint-Just-près -Brioude to the west and south-west and Saint-Laurent-Chabreuges to the north-west.
