It is located in the department of Haute-Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (before 2016 Auvergne ) and belongs to Arrondissement Brioude and the Canton Plateau du Haut-Velay granitique (2015 La Chaise-Dieu ).

Laval-sur-Doulon is about 40 kilometers north-north-west of Le Puy-en-Velay on the banks of the Doulon River . Laval-sur-Doulon is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Vert in the north and west, Doranges in the northeast, Saint-Alyre-d'Arlanc in the east, Cistrières in the east and southeast, Saint-Didier-sur-Doulon in the south and Champagnac- le-Vieux to the west and south-west.
