Pont de Vieille-Brioude over the Allier in Vieille-Brioude

The Pont de Vieille-Brioude is a stone arch bridge in the municipality of Brioude over the River Allier in the Haute-Loire department in France . The bridge with a total length of 100 m and an arch span of 45 m was built from 1824 to 1832.

Medieval predecessor building

A medieval predecessor building on the same site was probably built in 1479 and had a span of 54.57 m. For about 300 years this bridge was the one with the largest arch span of all masonry arch bridges existing at that time. The Trezzo Bridge , which is even larger with an arch span of 72 m , had already collapsed in 1416. The bridge construction was ordered by the local Madame de Dombes and executed by Grenier and Estone in the same way as the later built Pont Grand near Tournon-sur-Rhône . The completion of the bridge was delayed for several years due to various disputes. The bridge was too narrow and its steps too steep so that it could not be crossed by car. At 6 a.m. on March 27, 1822, the bridge collapsed.
