Louis Mandrin (born February 11, 1725 in Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs , † May 26, 1755 in Valence ) was a robber captain and smuggler in the French Dauphiné at the time of the Ancien Régime . He was executed in Valence on May 26, 1755 .

Mandrin's life became the material for numerous adaptations in literature, opera and film. In the French regions of Savoy and Dauphiné, Mandrin, whose preferred victims were the officials of the royal French tax authorities ( ferme générale ), is still considered a popular hero today . Several caves are named after him, e.g. B. the Grotto Mandrin near Malataverne and the Grotte de Mandrin near Grenoble .
