The Artesonraju is one of about 50 peaks of the Cordillera Blanca in the Peruvian Andes . The mountain in the Ancash region is not only popular with mountaineers because of its aesthetics, but is still spared from commercial tours. The summit, which resembles a pyramid, is located between two gorges and - depending on the source - reaches a height of between 5,999 and 6,025 meters. The summit is completely covered with snow in summer and ice in winter. The mountain is seen as the template for the mountain in the Paramount Pictures logo .

Artesonraju Summit

Four routes are known for climbing Artesonraju: The easiest route leads from the Santa Cruz Gorge over the north ridge. The route through the southeast face starts in the lagoon of Parón , is 800 meters high and offers an average of 45 to 55 degrees of ice climbing (70 degrees at the steepest point). The southwest face is 700 meters high and offers ice climbing between 50 and 80 degrees. The little-used east ridge is between 40 and 50 degrees steep and, due to its length, is usually climbed in one to two days.

The summit ridge of the mountain is notorious for the fragility of the overhanging Séracs . At the beginning of the climbing season there is a great danger of avalanches. The best time to travel to the summit is from mid-June to early August.
