Diego Ulissi (born July 15, 1989 in Cecina ) is an Italian road cyclist .

Athletic career

Diego Ulissi won the gold medal in road racing at the Junior World Championships in 2006 and 2007 .

After two years with the elite, he joined the UCI ProTeam Lampre-Farnese Vini in 2010 and won the one-day race Gran Premio Industria e Commercio di Prato in his first year there . He won his first WorldTour race on the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2011 after Giovanni Visconti , who defeated him in the sprint of a breakaway group, was reset due to disability. His most successful year to date was 2013, in which he won the Settimana Internazionale stage race , a stage of the Tour of Poland and the Italian semi-classics Milan-Turin , Coppa Sabatini and Giro dell'Emilia .

In 2014 he was able to build on the successes of the previous year. At the beginning of the season he managed a stage win at the Australian Tour Down Under . Then he won the Italian one-day race Gran Premio Città di Camaiore . At the Giro d'Italia 2014 , he was able to win the fifth and eighth stages after attacks on ascending finish sections.

Diego Ulissi was then provisionally suspended twice by his Lampre-Merida team. The first suspension took place in June after a positive doping test became known on Salbutamol after the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia . After the Swiss federation had initiated disciplinary proceedings - the Italian drives with a Swiss license - there was another suspension in September. The team pointed out that prior to the stage, Ulissi was taking a permitted drug containing salbutamol because of a bronchial disease. Because of this incident, Ulissi was banned for nine months in January 2015. The suspension began retrospectively on June 25, 2014 and ended on March 28, 2015.

After the suspension, Ulissi won the hilly 7th stage of the Giro d'Italia 2015 in the sprint of the peloton. In 2016 he achieved two stage victories at the Giro d`Italia and won the Spanish one-day race Circuito de Getxo. In 2017 he rode the Tour de France, but could not achieve the hoped-for stage win. However, he won a one-day race in the World Tour category for the first time when he won the 2017 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal after finishing third a year earlier.
