Since the middle of the 20th century there has been a steady increase in the population of the place, which is mainly due to the influx of people from Clermont-Ferrand. In 1973 the small wine village of Saint-Hyppolite with its 650 inhabitants was incorporated. The old place name Châtelguyon became Châtel-Guyon.
economy
Viticulture has been practiced in the area - possibly since Roman times. In addition, the place has a small thermal bath with around 20,000 visitors annually - a corresponding infrastructure (hotels, casino, golf and tennis courts, etc.) is available.
history
The name of the place can be traced back to a medieval castle - which was removed down to the last stone in the 19th century - at the feet of which the place developed. The castle was built by Count Guido II († 1222).
Attractions
The former castle and the Saint-Coust priory, which was founded by the mother monastery, the Mozac Abbey , were in ruins as early as the 18th century. In the 19th century, the stones from both buildings were removed and sold as building material. On the hill above the village on which the castle once stood, there is now a Calvaire (cross).
- A museum ( Maison des Vignerons ) shows furniture and costumes from the area.
- Some houses from the turn of the century still have subtle Art Nouveau features.
- The Église Sainte-Anne is a pilgrimage church from the 19th century, located above the village, which was decorated with frescoes on themes from the Apocalypse in 1956 .
Others
In 1886 the French novelist Guy de Maupassant stayed in Châtelguyon for a few months. A year later, his novel Mont Oriol , set in the area, was published.
