Saint-Éloy-les-Mines ( Occitan : Sant Aloi de las Minas ) is a French municipality with 3709 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Riom and the canton of Saint-Éloy-les-Mines, whose main town is Saint-Éloy-les-Mines. The inhabitants of the municipality are called Éloysiens .
geography
Saint-Éloy-les-Mines is located in the Combraille countryside , about 30 kilometers southeast of Montluçon . The Bouble flows through the municipality . Saint-Éloy-les-Mines is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Buxières-sous-Montaigut in the north, Durmignat in the northeast, Moureuille in the east, Menat in the southeast, Youx in the south and west, and Montaigut in the west and northwest.
The former Route nationale 143 runs through the municipality .
history
The rise and fall of the community is closely related to coal mining. Coal has been mined here since the 18th century. Shortly after the Second World War, the dismantling reached its peak and the community had around 7,200 inhabitants. With the socialization of the coal mines, however, the decline in production began and so the last mine was closed at the beginning of 1978.
