Thuret is a place and a central French community with 921 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

location

Thuret is located in the heart of Limagne about 25 km (driving distance) southwest of Vichy and about 31 km northeast of Clermont-Ferrand at an altitude of about 320  m . Riom , the capital of the arrondissement , is a good 15 km southwest. The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 645 mm / year) falls mainly in the summer months.

The steady decline in population since the middle of the 19th century is due to the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of smaller farms. The community has experienced a renewed population surge since the 1970s because of its proximity to the greater Clermont-Ferrand area.

history

Human traces go back a long way, as hand axes and knives made of flint have been found in the area . Human settlements probably first existed in Gallo-Roman times . Thuret was on an important Roman road that connected Clermont-Ferrand ( Augustonemetum ) with Vichy ( Aquae Calidae ); So far, five Roman country estates ( villae rusticae ) have been discovered in the area.

In a document by Pippin II of Aquitaine from the year 848, Thuret is first mentioned as a viguerie . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to a Benedictine - Priorat , was the mother monastery in Clermont-Ferrand.
