Montel-de-Gelat is located about 55 kilometers west-northwest of Clermont-Ferrand in the old cultural landscape of the Combrailles . Montel-de-Gelat is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Dontreix in the north and west, Charensat in the northeast, Villosanges in the east, Tralaigues in the south, Mérinchal in the west and southwest.
