The headwaters of the Koeye River are located in the Pacific Ranges , part of the Coast Mountains , at an altitude of 1100  m . The Koeye River initially flows 5 km north and then turns west. It flows through a 3.5 km long nameless lake. After 4 miles, it reaches the eastern end of 2.5 miles long Koeye Lake . Immediately below this, the Koeye River still flows through Little Koeye Lake . The Koeye River then flows west for another 11 km before reaching Fitz Hugh Sound . The last 4 km form the estuary of the river. There are three river islands in this section of the river. The catchment area of the Koeye River covers about 165 km². It is entirely within the 190 km² Koeye Conservancy . This is in the tribal area of the Wuikinuxv First Nation .

Fish fauna

All five Pacific salmon species are found in the Koeye River system. Pink salmon , ketal salmon and silver salmon spawn in the lower reaches of the river. Sockeye salmon and king salmon use the deeper lakes on the middle reaches of the Koeye River as spawning grounds. There are also steelhead and cutthroat trout . The fish are an important source of food for the grizzly bear population in the sanctuary.
