The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Riom and the canton of Saint-Éloy-les-Mines (until 2015 Saint-Gervais-d'Auvergne ).

Saint-Julien-la-Geneste is about 30 kilometers northwest of Riom and about 40 kilometers northwest of Clermont-Ferrand . Saint-Julien-la-Geneste is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Maigner in the north and north-west, Gouttières in the north and east, Saint-Priest-des-Champs in the south and Espinasse in the west and south-west.
