Charbonnières-les-Varennes is located about 15 kilometers north-north-west of Clermont-Ferrand in the Monts Dômes on the Ambène river and in the Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Nature Park ( French Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne ). Charbonnières-les-Varennes is surrounded by the neighboring communities Loubeyrat in the north, Châtelguyon in the east and northeast, Enval in the east, Volvic in the south and southeast, Saint-Ours in the south and southwest, Pulvérières in the west and southwest and Manzat in the northwest.
The A89 autoroute runs through the municipality .
