Montaigut (formerly Montaigut-en-Combraille ) is a French municipality with 987 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Puy-de-Dôme in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Administratively it belongs to the arrondissement of Riom and is part of the canton of Saint-Éloy-les-Mines .
geography
The municipality is located in the Combraille countryside , around 25 kilometers southeast of Montluçon and 40 kilometers northwest of Riom . In the north it borders on the neighboring Allier department . Neighboring municipalities to Montaigut are:
- Buxières-sous-Montaigut in the northeast,
- Saint-Éloy-les-Mines to the east and south-east,
- Youx in the south,
- La Crouzille and Ars-les-Favets to the west and
- La Celle in the northwest.
The place itself is on the south side of a small hill. To the west of it rises the Bouron River , which was dammed up here to become the Étang de la Prade and turned into a leisure center. The departmental road D2144, which leads from Riom to Montluçon , supplies the municipality with traffic.
history
The name of the place comes from the hill Mons Acutus , which occupied a strategically important position between the Duchy of Auvergne and the Bourbonnais . Montaigut was the capital of what was then the Barony of Combraille .
