The 6th stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 6, 2012. It was 207.5 km long and led from Épernay to Metz . 194 of 198 drivers started.

Participating teams

route

The route ran mainly in an easterly direction through the Marne , Meuse , Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle departments . Although the profile was generally slightly wavy, steep climbs were largely absent. The intermediate sprint was held in Saint-Mihiel , followed shortly after by the only mountain classification of the day (4th category).

Race course

194 of the original 198 drivers started on this flat stage. After five kilometers, the American David Zabriskie ran away, who was joined a little later by the Italian Davide Malacarne , the Belgian Romain Zingle and the Dutch Karsten Kroon . The quartet extended their lead to 4:05 minutes by kilometer 28. After 35 kilometers, several drivers crashed, so that the pace of the field slowed. The outliers were able to extend their lead to almost seven minutes before it gradually decreased again.

Kroon won the intermediate sprint in Saint-Mihiel; 2:50 minutes later, Matthew Goss was the first in the field to pass this point. The only mountain classification of the day was won by Zabriskie. As a result, the field increased the pace significantly, with Goss' Team Orica GreenEdge doing the follow-up work. A mass crash occurred 26 kilometers from the finish, involving over a hundred riders. These included Fränk Schleck , Ryder Hesjedal , Jean-Christophe Péraud , Pierre Rolland , Robert Gesink , Alejandro Valverde , Thomas Voeckler and Mark Cavendish .

Due to the fall, the field split into several larger groups. While the front group continued to hunt down the outliers, a second group tried to keep the gap as low as possible. Malacarne, Zingle and Kroon were overtaken 2.5 kilometers from the finish, and one kilometer later also Zabriskie. In the sprint for the day's victory, Peter Sagan prevailed against André Greipel . The second part of the field hit the finish line 2:09 minutes behind, two other groups lost six and ten minutes respectively. Ryder Hesjedal, overall winner of the Giro d'Italia 2012 , lost over 13 minutes to the winner in the last group.
