The 13th stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 14, 2012 and led from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Cap d'Agde . With a distance of 217 kilometers there was a mountain classification of the 3rd category.

Participating teams

route

Cap d'Agde

The route mainly ran in a south-westerly direction through the Drôme , Gard and Hérault departments . It first passed the cities of Bagnols-sur-Cèze and Uzès . After the intermediate sprint, which was held in Mas-de-Londres , the drivers passed the western suburbs of Montpellier . From Frontignan we continued via Sète parallel to the coast. The profile was slightly wavy in the first two thirds, and largely flat in the last third along the Mediterranean Sea - with the exception of the mountain classification on Mont Saint-Clair , Sète's local mountain.

Shortly after the start, a group of five, consisting of Pablo Urtasun , Michael Mørkøv , Roy Curvers , Samuel Dumoulin and Matthieu Ladagnous, pulled away . A little later, Jimmy Engoulvent , Maxime Bouet and Jérôme Pineau caught up with them. The lead on the field grew to more than nine minutes in the first hour of the race, but then decreased to less than five minutes by kilometer 80 due to the follow-up work by the Orica GreenEdge team .

Urtasun was the first to pass the intermediate sprint; Peter Sagan was fastest in the field, who was 3:50 minutes behind . The field steadily narrowed the gap when Mørkøv broke away 63 kilometers from the finish and was now leading alone. Before Sète, Mørkøv was about a minute ahead of his pursuers and three minutes ahead of the field. In the steep ascent to Mont Saint-Clair, however, all the outliers were overtaken by the field, which in turn split into several groups. Jurgen Van Den Broeck won the mountain classification ahead of Cadel Evans , who had launched an attack on Bradley Wiggins in vain .

Back at sea level, the field was divided into several groups due to wind edges . Alexander Vinokurow and Michael Albasini broke out of the front group 16 kilometers before the finish . The two were unable to break away decisively as the Lotto Belisol team kept the pace of their pursuers constantly high. They were caught again two and a half kilometers before the end of the stage. After Luis León Sánchez's attack also failed, the sprint came, which André Greipel won with a few centimeters ahead of Peter Sagan.
