The 19th stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 21, 2012. It was held as an individual time trial and was 53.5 km long. The start was in Bonneval , the finish in Chartres .

Participating teams

route

The route led in a northwest and northeast direction through the Eure-et-Loir . The profile was almost completely flat and had no topographical difficulties. The intermediate times were measured in Mézières-au-Perche and Bailleau-le-Pin .

Race course

The race was opened shortly after noon by Frenchman Jimmy Engoulvent , who finished 153rd and last in the overall standings, 3:49:09 hours behind. The first time to be taken seriously was set by the German Patrick Gretsch , who finished with a time of 1:06:41 h. This record lasted almost three hours until the Spaniard Luis León Sánchez drove, who was 38 seconds less on the road. The Slovak Peter Velits was only one second behind Sánchez in the first split and lost another eleven seconds to the finish. A little later, the Australian Richie Porte slipped between Velits and Gretsch.

Last year's tour winner, Cadel Evans , had no chance of winning. He was far behind the best in both intermediate times and finally only finished 52nd. The American Tejay van Garderen was three seconds ahead of the still leading Sánchez in the first split, but lost more than half a minute the rest of the way (although he had overtaken Evans, who started three minutes before him). The Briton Chris Froome started the race second from bottom . He was only four seconds ahead of Sánchez in the second split, but was able to distance the Spaniard by more than half a minute on the last section. As in the first time trial of the 2012 Tour in Besançon , Bradley Wiggins started last and clearly undercut Froome's times again. At the finish he finally had a lead of 76 seconds.
