The 9th stage of the Tour de France 2012 took place on July 9, 2012. It was held as an individual time trial and was 41.5 km long. The start was in Arc-et-Senans , the finish in Besançon . 178 of 198 drivers still competed.

Participating teams

route

The route ran in a north-easterly direction through the Jura and Doubs departments . The profile was wavy on the first half of the route, then mostly flat. The intermediate times were measured in Abbans-Dessus and Avanne-Aveney .

Race course

The start was initially every two minutes, after the first 120 riders every three minutes. The first driver to tackle the race at 9.45 a.m. was the Frenchman Brice Feillu, who was last in the overall standings and set the first target time with 57:33 minutes. The Swede Gustav Larsson undercut this time by no less than 3:14 minutes. The Dutchman Lieuwe Westra was ten seconds faster . With 53:40 minutes, 29 seconds less than Westra, the German Tony Martin, who was handicapped by a broken scaphoid in his hand , set a best time shortly before 1 p.m. despite a flat tire at the beginning of the stage, which should last for almost three hours.

Bradley Wiggins on the way to a stage win

The Swiss Fabian Cancellara , who was one of the favorites to win the day despite suffering a broken collarbone in April, crossed the finish line shortly before 4 p.m. with 52:21 minutes, undermining Martin's time by 1:19 minutes. A little later the Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel pushed himself between the two. The American Tejay van Garderen subjected Cancellara's best time to a first serious test: In the intermediate times he was three or two seconds ahead, but finally lost nine seconds at the finish.

On the other hand, Briton Chris Froome was faster than Cancellara , who set a record time 22 seconds lower with 51:59. Most recently, Briton Bradley Wiggins and Australian Cadel Evans , last year's winner of the tour, started. It soon became apparent that Wiggins was much faster and would also make it the day's victory. He undercut Froome's record by another 35 seconds. Evans, however, continuously lost time and was 1:43 minutes behind the overall leader in the end.
